A great DVD/VCR combo, you won't be disappointed

Author's Rating: Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: Price, can be hooked up to very OLD TV sets!!!

Cons: Commercial skip doesn't really skip commercials, remote is a bit cluttered

The Bottom Line:
A great buy, enough features to keep anyone happy, definitely recommended for anyone who needs a new VCR, and wants to explore the DVD world.

Author's Review
The Sony DVD/VCR player is a great choice. I bought it to replace my mother's old VCR player, hoping it would encourage her to discover DVDs, without her losing the ability to tape her favorite shows. I wondered if the quality of the VCR player could be as good as our previous stand alone one?

**please note that this review is meant for people who don't turn there homes into movie theaters, instead just want a quality DVD/VCR combo. My mother can't tell the difference between DTS and dolby 5.1, nor does she know what progressive scan is. Naturally this review is for people like her.

In reality, the VCR player performed BETTER then our previous stand alone player(about 2 years old). The picture quality is great, and recording is easy. A satisfied customer already, and i hadn't even tried the DVD half yet.

Some VCR features:

There are too many features too describe, i will talk about the ones that are advertised on the box. First off, it boasts "fast rewind". It does rewind faster then any other machine I have ever seen, it rewinds a full tape in about 90 seconds, if that.
Next there's the commercial skip: A button that fast forwards the tape 30 seconds at the touch of a button. **Don't confuse this with the feature many hi-end VCR player's have, which can actually fast forward commercials and "sense" when the show is back on. This one can't do that.
Besides those two "new-ish" features, you can expect it to have every other standard feature a similarly priced VCR would have.

The DVD half:

Why buy a Sony? Unique to Sony's DVD/VCR combo, the DVD player is progressive scan. On most other combo's that wont be the case. That feature alone will probably get customers.
The fast forwarding (scanning) is great, it can go as fast as 128x, or as slow as 2x, depending on how many times you push the button. Watching in slow motion is possible.

The single greatest feature? It can be hooked up to older TV's that lack digital input/output jacks. (you know, the yellow, white and red wires) Although when you use the coaxial (the wire that an ordinary VCR and TV use) hookup you do lose image quality.

Random notes:
The remote is a bit cluttered, although it might eliminate the need for 2 separate remotes so i can't really complain. The remote can be programmed to turn on your TV, possible making it 3 remotes in one.
When you insert a DVD in, the player switches automatically to DVD mode, and switches to VCR mode when a VHS is inserted. Although not tested, DTS and Dolby digital 5.1 sound capabilities are possible.
