I bought this sub for $107 on sale from best buy. I have a RCA RT2360 Home Theater system and I decided I needed a little more in the bottom end department. I was immediately attracted to the size of the driver (12") and the price. Also anyone that has bought a Sony home theater product recently should know that Sony has definitely stepped their game up. My brother got a Sony home theater system not too long ago and I was completely shocked at the sound quality and the clarity and punch of the sub. So I went ahead and ordered the M-500. I read the reviews on here and had a feeling that I would be pleased. So it arrived and the hookup was simple enough, I just plugged it in to the wall socket and ran the cable that came with it from the pre-out on my receiver to the input on the sub. Of course the first thing i did was put on some music with lots of bass and turned it up. I had it turned about halfway up on the volume control on the sub and had the sub volume level all the way up on my receiver. I was shocked to find that no matter how high I turned up my receiver, I got no distortion, just thunderous bass that shook the pictures in the hallway. I decided to test it to the limit and by the time I noticed any distortion, it was up so loud that it would be hard to stand to listen to for over a minute. So if you have any doubts about this sub not being able to handle a lot of volume, throw them away.

Another issue that I want to address was is the "auto-off" feature. In other reviews it was said that there was problems with the sub turning off while watching movies or listening at low volume. I only encountered a problem with this when I had the volume turned up (about 3/4 turn) on the sub and had the sub channel volume turned down lower on the receiver. If you increase the signal strength from the receiver and turn the volume down on the sub, you won't have a problem with the sub turning off pre-maturely. Plus, YOU CAN TURN THE "AUTO-OFF" FEATURE OFF! DUH!! Yes my friends, there is a switch on the back to turn the auto-off feature on/off.

As far as clarity, this sub is more than sufficient for the normal person to the semi-audiophile. I also ran the THX test that came with the movie "The Village" one particular audio test plays a sound that goes from 200khz all the way down to 20hz. this sub handled the test with flying colors with no distortion at the lower frequencies. Other reviews said that this sub could not respond to 20hz, but according to the THX certified test, it did.

Other than what I have stated, everything else in the other reviews is true about this sub. It is the best sub out for under $200, and if you have the money, why not buy 2? I would definitely recommend this sub to anyone in the market for a 12 inch sub.
