Better Choice Than the SA-WM250

Pros: If you are able to spend twice the price, go for the SA-WM500.

The Bottom Line:
Better Choice Than the SA-WM250.
I recently bought and exchanged the Sony SA-WM250 subwoofer for the Sony SA-WM500 due to several deficiencies the former had. Besides the SA-WM500 having a 150 watt amp as opposed to a 100 watt amp, and a 12" speaker, as opposed to an 8" speaker, the controls, i.e. level, phase and cutoff frequency, are conveniently placed on the rear top. The 250's are on the rear, which requires the use of three hands and a mirror to adjust correctly. The auto on/off is also a must which is lacking on the 250. Several times I forgot to turn the 250 off and once forgot to turn it on, because of this extra step. The 500 has a line out to connect to another subwoofer, if desired. Finally, there is a noticeable improvement in the quality of the sound.
I'm not going to go into any technical details, as I am not an expert in this area. I am only speaking as a consumer that appreciates a decent home sound system. My system is used mainly for music, not home theater. The cost of subwoofers is high but I believe this unit, which is reasonably priced, will satisfy even critical music listeners.
