The Sony PlayStation truly shines with 3D-rendered action games, such as Tomb Raider and Spider-Man. These and other 3D-based titles place players in the middle of elaborate gaming environments that take full advantage of the system's ability to render up to 360,000 polygons per second. The PlayStation also has the capability to display 16.8 million colours simultaneously and can support full-frame video playback at 30 frames per second. In addition to impressive graphics, the PlayStation also offers CD-quality sound. Each PlayStation disc has the capacity to store up to 650 MB of data--significantly more information than can be stored on cartridge-based games. As an added bonus, the PlayStation will even play your favourite music CDs (accompanied by a selection of cool graphics). Minimize

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Great Quality System with lots of games of many genres

Cons: The Trove of Next Gen Consoles on the way

The Bottom Line:
Great system, lots of genres, tons of killer app games

Author's Review
Playstation is one of the best video games systems out there on the market today even as I speak even though the PS 2 is already out.

Basically what makes any system great is the games (and not the technical specs, which are often part of the HYPE machine you see with every new console that is soon to be released , err.. AKA PS2, aka soon to be Xbox and so on and so forth) and I stress what makes the PS so great as a console machine is the Huge vast Market of games available.

Just to list you some of my favorites (And Also Reasons why I bought this console)
Da GAMES:
Castelevania :Symphony of the Night (A Must Buy for any Action-RPG Fan)
Gran Turismo - A Racing Fans Delight

Street Fighter EX + Alpha - Fun Fighting Game

Resident Evil 1,2,3 - Truly a Class by itself

Tony Hawk Series - Takes Skating Games to the Next Lvl)

NBA Live (Solid B-ball action every year)

Madden Series (Football from EA - If its in the game, ITS IN THE GAME, LOL)

Spyro - Great Platform Series

Metal Gear Solid - A Masterpiece (MUST BUY GAME!)

Final Fantasy V,VI,VII,VII - Square , Da Masters of the RPG
and many other games which make this system one of the best to own due to its vast library of games and genres.

Here is just a base list of all the genres you can find on the Playstation : RPG, Fighting, Action, Platform, Basketball, Football, Baseball, Dancing (aka Parappa) , Musical Games (Puyo Puyo 3), Tetris like games, Skateboarding games, snowboarding games, Strategy/Real Time, Sims, FPS, and many others combine to make this system have a smorgshborg (Did I Spell that right?) of options for anyone looking for any particular genre or style of game, then the Playstation will definetly have you covered.

And how does the Competetion stack up, well the N64 does pretty well with its base of Hi Quality 1st Party Games made by themselves , but they lack due to its cartridge format the large vast library the Playstation has and the Sega Dreamcast, a system I truly love, well they now due to financial reasons are becoming a 3rd party publisher only.
Rest in Peace Dreamcast, you were a great system.

But for all intents and purposes, if you want a system with nearly all genres covered and many killer apps to play with over 1000 titles then the Playstation is a great system to pick up and cheap too, only $99 to buy a PS now!
