The sleek and silvery device enables computer users to perform common CD-R/RW burning tasks, such as backing up data, recording digital images and creating original music CDs at up to 24X speed. When connected to a computer, the MPD-AP20U also operates as a DVD-ROM drive for viewing DVD movies, and as a Memory Stick media reader for viewing, saving and transferring files. When detached from a computer, the drive works as a stand-alone CD player that can play back standard audio CDs, as well as MP3 and WAV files from either a CD, DVD, or Memory Stick media. Minimize

My Sony MPD AP20U CD-RW/DVD-ROM Burner.

Author's Rating: Rating: 3/5 stars

Pros: Compact size

Cons: Awful earbuds and remote control

The Bottom Line:
Provides the ability to play DVD on a computer and doubles as a portable CD player, on sale makes a good buy.

I was going to upgrade my laptop and desktop to include DVD when I saw this thing and thought "Hey, I can use this thing!", particularly since there was a store and manufacturer rebate involved. I got it home, loaded the B clip software and Power DVD, and tried it out. Using a USB 2.0 connection it plays DVD's great, and works well with CD record or playback. Where it really blows it in the MP3 department. But since I don't usually record anything other than work related copies of CD's, it works fine for me. One thing that bugs me though is why SONY didn't make this gizmo capable of connecting to a TV, unless you connect it to a computer that has the capability to out to a TV. So while it works well enough, SONY, in my view, could have really scored big with this if it had the ability to go directly to a TV.
The remote is terribly hard to use, for a so called portable device, and the earbud cord is way to short- I tried carrying the Sony in my bag which I listened to a CD, and found the earbuds very uncomfortable, so I dumped them and instead use a set of headphones that came with my SONY portable CD player. Seriously, the cord for the earbuds is about 2 feet long, so carrying the player at your waist isn't going to work.
