Pros: Good recording quality, excellent editing software, fast transfer to PC, and sturdy leather case.
Cons: Recording capacity is stingy; 41 minutes at stereo setting isn't enough. No recording meter.
The Bottom Line:
Recorder has 41 min of stereo recording -- it should be double that at this price. But 125 min at SP isn't bad.
This is my first purchase of a digital voice recorder. I've used tape recorders for years, as well as minidisc recorders. I'm a reporter and use recorders professionally.
The best feature about this recorder is Sony's voice editing software. Moving voice files to a PC is very easy, and playing them back, typing up notes, is a powerful feature. I am very impressed with this software.
The recording time isn't great. At the highest quality level, ST, you only get 41 min recording time but in stereo. I use the next level, SP, 125 min. Quality is good. I have not tried LP, 334 min, but from what I read sound quality is diminished. The ability to quickly download voice files to the PC, then clear the recorders memory, makes helps make the memory limit manageable.
Microphone quality seems fine. I've used the built-in mic as well as an add-on. Couldn't tell big difference.
Although I'm pleased with this device, I wonder if it wouldn't have made more sense to buy a Sony recorder with removable memory. I find that I'm watching my usage carefully to make sure I don't exceed capacity. Having a 64mb memory stick, however, would give up to 10 hours of recording time. The recorder does give the option of switching from ST to SP or LP mode, although the capacity indicator may give an imprecise reading.
I'll add that while I think minidisc recorders are superior in terms of sound quality and storage media, the software that comes with minidisc recorders is geared toward music downloads and not voice editing. Sony should change that.
Although this device has a fair number of menu features, I wish it had a recording meter so you know whether you have the mic close enough and sensitivity at the right level. A nit: the buttons are a little small and can be difficult to work with.
