Sony TRV-33 is a GREAT camera. Buy it!

Pros: Crystal clear, sharp video. Great sound. Touch pad LCD. Intuitive menus.
Cons: The remote control could have more uses.
The Bottom Line:
I recommend buying the TRV-33. It is the best camera in the $600 price range and can record your old VHS tapes.
I recently was in the market for a new MiniDV camcorder. I have a JVC GrDvp-3u that I bought just over 2 years ago. The JVC has had MORE than it's share of problems, and never really gave a clean indoor picture. Most of my filming is done indoors, filming my now 2 year old son. With another child on the way this summer, it was time to get a new, non-indoor-blurry camera. There was no way I was going to put up with blurry indoor videos for my new kid. 2 years of blurry indoor videos of my son is enough I think. I did my research and decided on the TRV-33.
First, the TRV-33 is small, but wide. My JVC was flat-out small and could easily fit in the pockets of my shorts or pants. The Sony is wider, but will fit in a jacket pocket. This is the ONLY thing I liked better about my old JVC. The TRV-33 is still small however and I have no trouble "lugging" it about in my jacket pocket or even, dare I say, man purse. :+) It fits right inside with my wallet, PDA, cell phone, medication, work ID etc. etc. The TRV-33's outdoor, filming is the best I've ever seen and is just incredibly clear.
It's indoor filming is also UNBELIEVABLY clear. I only have my JVC to reference. With the exact same lighting, in the exact same room, of the exact same people, my TRV-33 films the scene with rich color and amazingly sharp focus. I am amazed and stunned.
The still photos are quite surprisingly good. With my JVC, indoors without installing a flash, the pictures were barely usable. With the Sony, they are pretty darn good. It won't replace a digital camera, but I don't have a digital camera, so now I do. And I don't have to carry another item in my purse. LOL!
Finally, to answer the questions raised by the other reviewer that panned the TRV-33, here is an honestly satisfied owner's rebuttal. The TRV-33 does not come with an I-link cable. That cable comes with most firewire adapters and motherboards with firewire. If you are planning on moving video from your TRV-33 to your computer and don't have a firewire card, get the BasicDV PCI card. It's around $50 AND comes with an I-link cable. Next, no it doesn't come with a MiniDV tape. You weren't planning on buying tapes? Thirdly, the 8MB memory stick that is provided will hold around 15 photos at the highest resolution. If this isn't enough, just buy a bigger memory stick. 35mm film comes with 24 shots to a roll, then it COSTS MONEY to have it developed. Just move the photos to your computer and voila, another 15 photos. FREE! The I get around an hour for the battery. Maybe more, maybe less. Have I mentioned how SMALL this camera is? Small camera, small battery. There is a battery upgrade, but again, that battery is BIGGER.
