Purchased from Usavegelt.com for $726.16 in May 03 with shipping, handling, & insurance. I am planning a Italy and Switzerland backpacking trip in June and wanted a small, high quality camcorder that I could easily learn and rely on.

The supplied rechargeable battery NP-FM30 last for an hour so I purchased a NP-FM50 that lasts for 122min with LCD and 148min with viewfinder. I recommend the batterybank.com, Jessica is very helpful and polite. The FM50 battery has the same dimensions as the FM30. The power lever and remaining minutes of battery power are accurate. I ran the battery down to 3 minutes remaining and it still operated as if it were a full charge.

The camcorder can save a still pic to the memory stick while recording video to the tape with no interruption. Neat feature but the quality is a 640 resolution on the still. I read on other reviews the still picture capability was not good on this camcorder, but I disagree. I can set the resolution to 1152 fine and it takes great pictures. So good is the quality that I am not going to take my 2.1M pixel camera on my trip, no need.

Other users of small digital camcorders complain that motor noise is sometimes recorded on the video tape due to the location of the microphone and tape motor on a small camcorder. This is not a problem on the DCR-TRV33. I was recording a construction site and I could hear my footsteps on the gravel as I walked around, so the supplied microphone is crisp and clear enough for me. I have not detected any recorded motor noise.

VCR, OFF, CAMERA, & MEMORY are the settings and only five buttons on the camera. Nice clean appearance, no buttons to break or fall off. Crisp color viewfinder is great. Nightshot will come in handy if I ever need it.

I didn't need the best or most expensive digital camcorder available on the market. I now own a compact, high quality, easy to use, proud to recommend SONY DCR-TRV33.
