Pros: Big screen, quiet operation, easy menus, light weight.
Cons: Start/Stop button position, old fashioned look.
The Bottom Line:
Forget Canon...go with the TRV27.
I researched miniDV camcorders for months, and fell in love with the Canon ZR series. I intended to buy the ZR40, because I was not interested in Bells and Whistles, but I ended up with a ZR45. That was returned the next day, see my review.
The TRV27 is just under a week old now in my hands. It is light weight, easy to use and a total joy to work with. I didn't get a sVideo cable yet, so I can't make claims on the video quality just yet.
I ran tests to determine if there was any motor noise, and there is none. I recorded in a dead quiet room, and cranked the TV volume to max. The motors were barely noticeable.
The night vision is very cool as a toy, but I am not sure I will use it much.
The large LCD panel is fantastic. At first I thought about going with the TRV25 with the smaller screen, but the bigger screen is more then worth it.
Right now, my only complaints are the lack of styling. IE, the internal buttons look like something out of the 70's and the camera in general is kind of boring looking. Big deal eh? *laugh*
The only REAL problem, is I find that when I am holding the cam, the start/stop button is sometimes difficult for me to reach with my thumb. I think I need to play with the strap to get it just right.
I bought an additional battery. The medium length battery was $49 at circuit city and is still pretty small so I went with that instead of the long life battery which was heavier, bulkier, and more expensive.
I will add more later, as I use it. For now, this camera rocks.
