Great Little Digital Camcorder

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Small in size, lightweight, crisp, clean and clear display, optics, video or snapshot modes

Cons: Only 10x zoom, no "extras" included in purchase price.

The Bottom Line:
Small, light digital camcorder, Sony's TRV20 can't be beat. It has virtually everything anyone short of a Hollywood director could want built into it and best of all, it works.

I have owned my Sony DV camcorder for one year now. I purchased it shortly after they were released to the market because I found it to have everything I needed (digital camera) and wanted as well (a camcorder), but could not afford both. I started looking at the JVC and Panasonic models and found the descriptions and write-ups here and on other sites to be quite informative and was almost ready to lay my money down on the Panasonic DV 800 when I found a review of the Sony TRV11. After getting over the initial sticker shock on this, I still could not bring myself to part with that extra money. It wasn't until I actually went out to Circuit City and Best Buy to compare cameras and prices that I saw the Sony side-by-side with the others I was considering. It didn't take too long for me to move all the way up to the TRV20. Once I saw the difference in the pictures and the video displayed on the TV sets in the stores, I was sold. The others are not bad mind you, but the clarity and crispness from the Sony was way beyond any of the other DV cams I looked at. I tested by photographing some of the change in my pocket, pictures in my wallet and a 5 dollar bill. (With the 4 MB memory stick that is standard, the still camera will take roughly 6 pictures, although I have on occasion gotten seven on it.)
To me, the difference in the picture and video quality was worth the extra $500 it cost me to step up to the Sony TRV20. It has a few more features than the TRV11. True, I know I paid a premium price as the TRV20 was literally brand new, but again, I felt it was worth the extra cost when compared to what was currently available. I continue to use the camera on almost a daily basis and to this date, I have not had any problems with it at all. Battery life is excellent, and it has an auto-power saver feature if left on and not used for a few minutes to lengthen battery life. The display is very good in the daylight and still usable even in the sun. And the sound is very clean and crisp as well. The low light / night shot camera is the best that I've seen.
I would definitely recommend testing these for yourself as I did at a store near you and see the difference yourself before you spend your money. You may find as I did, that its worth a little extra to step up to the Sony.
