Sony DCR-TRV18 Excellent Value for $$$

Pros: Outstanding picture & sound; extended battery is awesome.
Cons: Extensive software loading necessary for computer connection; tapes are only 80 mins max.
The Bottom Line:
Highly recommended for quality of picture & sound; Sony camcorders are top drawer in durability.
I purchased mine in Sep 2003 at Circuit City for the heavily discounted price of $580.00 including a $150.00 10-hour "smart" battery (was marked as damaged, but everything was still in the original shrink wrap--no damage!). Included Memory Stick and USB cable, also a CD with software for connecting to your computer.
I read the extensive operator's manual thru completely when I opened the box and became familiar with the camera. Wow--it has an incredible number of features, most of which the average Joe will never even attempt to use (video editing, digital image manipulation, etc.) That said, it is still a very easy to use "point-and-shoot" video camera with outstanding picture and sound. There is an included 8 MB Memory Stick to which you can save still photos or streaming video (limited time) and copy directly to a computer. You can also connect the camera via the included USB cable and use it as an internet camera or copy video from the DV tape or Memory Stick.
The picture and sound quality are LIGHT YEARS ahead of any older analog format (VHS, Hi 8, etc.) you may be accustomed to. Incredibly clear, broadcast-quality video and superior digital sound is just a button away! Typical Sony quality (their televisions are unbeatable).
The optional smart battery is very cool in that is tells you EXACTLY how many minutes are left on the battery. When I turned my camera on after charging it read "584 minutes", which blew me away (that's almost 10 HOURS!!).
I highly recommend every owner sit down with the manual and learn everything you can about what this camera has to offer; play with them and learn how they work. You will miss an amazing number of cool features if you don't.
