Sony introduces its new Mini DV Handycam camcorder incorporating Carl Zeiss optics, USB streaming and the MPEG Movie EX feature - the DCR-TRV18. The camcorder will record for up to 12 hours or playback for up to 13 hours (with LCD screen off) on a single charge with the optional NP-QM91 battery. The Super NightShot function allows you to capture monochrome video even when shooting in total darkness (0 lux) using the built-in infrared system up to ten feet away. Great camera, with good features. Highly recommended DV Camera for home and shoestring budget movies.
I primarily bought this camcorder for my home videos, and also for my long time ambition of making a mini-movie. This camera provides a mix of economy and quality, keeping the operations of the device quite straightforward. I like the steady shot feature, as it reduces shaky video to a great extent. I was impressed with the picture and fader effects. Titling is available but I had a hard time getting it to work. You need to read the manual very carefully for advanced features like Audiodub, etc. I would rather use my Pinnacle DV Capture card for such effects as its very easy in it. The still images captured lack quality. They are fine for viewing on monitors, but not for printing. Dont leave your still camera back home during tours. I generally use the viewfinder rather than CCD for previewing, to conserve battery power. However the placement of the Menu button is such that the CCD requires to be opened each time. It should have been located outside the CCD panel. However the pros of this product such as excellent picture quality, colors, night shot well cover up the minor cons. Night shot is particularly good for shooting in total darkness. The result is B/W picture, and u may see ghostly eyes. But it gives the thrill of adventure photography. Things which I learnt later about the camera is that it can also be used to convert old analog videos to latest DV format. I have been using the camera for 2 months now, and I would definitely recommend this camera.
