Pros: Good Picture quality, Fold out Screen
Cons: No Steady Shot! No color view finder
The Bottom Line:
Great Value, Hi-8 at its best! Excellent battery life, this camera will record longer on the same battery than any other Sony!
This camera is like a 1996 Honda Civic, it gets the job done reliably. No flashy features, a no nonsense transportation, or in this case, a simple way to record Video. The titling features of this camera are the same as in the Ultra-High Priced models, Go Figure! The only thing my 1997 Hi-8 camcorder has on this fella is a steady shot. This camera costs about $250 less than mine did! You don't have to worry about this media disapearing anytime soon like you might if you wanted a VHS-C camera. Digital 8 cameras use Hi-8 film, so this will be around for quite some time. Sony cameras are very reliable, just keep them away from sand and excessive moisture. The 2.5" screen is utilitarian. Any bigger is a waste in my opinion. Waste on cost of camera, and waste on battery life. These are the two biggest complaints of people who own camcorders, battery life and initial cost of the camera. To really be frugal on battery life, close the screen and use the black and white view-finder. Remember, when the onscreen battery life shows you how much time is left in minutes, that is usually the time left when the screen is closed and when using the viewfinder, as it is in this camera. This camera is an excellent value, perhaps consider the next one up in the line, the CCDTRV68, which has image stabilization (Steadyshot) but remember, one store will choose to carry the CCDTRV58 OR the CCDTRV68, not both. They are too close in features to justify a store carrying both.
