Pros: reasonable capacity and throughput and cost for personal use
Cons: prone to life-ending internal gear damage, significantly limiting unit lifetime
This is a good personal shredder with a relatively short (couple of years) lifetime. The lifetime appears to be limited by the nylon gearing used in the drive mechanism. I've not disassembled my unit, but the problem sounds exactly like that reported at http://www.fixya.com/support/t121485-motor_runs_both_forward_reverse_but where the motor runs but the gearing is frozen. My forward motor run sounds smooth, but my reverse reveals a loud click-click-click which sounds exactly like a gear moving and attempting unsuccessfully to bit a second damaged gear. Also, you should be diligent about using gear oil for the unit (I think this applies to all cross-cut type units).
