The perfect comfy place to rock and nurse a newborn
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: Beautiful, sturdy construction.
Cons: The price is a little steep for the bottom-of-the-barrel budget.
The Bottom Line:
What an amazing glider! Still glides like a *silent* charm after several months of attachment parenting (which means lots of rocking!)
I can't believe that I used to think nursing in bed was the most comfortable thing to do. I was wrong!
I have always had a very tight budget for nursery items because I've had 3 babies in two and half very short years. That means products have to stand up to TONS of use and abuse, and yet not break the budget for more important things like groceries for a family of five.
I started looking for a glider and ottoman about 6 months before my third baby was due because I wanted to get a SCREAMING deal. Alas, inexpensive gliders often don't come with ottomans, and the ones that do have horrible reviews about thin cushions, flimsy construction, etc. I was very fortunate to find the exact Shermag glider that I thought would match the nursery and provide plenty of sturdiness for those late night rockings (my husband and I are attachment parents, so rocking and holding is a huge part of our child-rearing). It retailed for about $280, which was steep. I ended up winning it on an Ebay auction for $103, which was a tremendous blessing.
Here is what I love about the Shermag glider:
-The fabric covering is very soft - feels like fleece against your skin.
-Easy care for spot cleaning - vacuum for normal maintenance and wipe with damp cloth otherwise.
-FIRM seat pads. I hate those ones that show your butt dimples once you've sat in them for 2 minutes - this one doesn't show even a shadow once you get up - looks as if it has not been sat in at all after several months.
-Springs are used in the support of the seat, not fabric or solid wood, making it comfortable to sit in for long periods of time.
-Easy construction. I was worried at first because I had heard horror stories about the flimsiness of some gliders. There is very little that you have to actually assemble, and I was able to put it together at 7 months pregnant. This glider is made with quality wood and craftsmanship.
-TALL seat back - I'm 5'10" and my husband is 6'3" so we both need a glider that can actually support our heads (otherwise, might as well nurse in bed). This one has that feature without forcing you to lean too far back to get comfortable.
The only thing I don't like about this glider ottoman set is that the ottoman sits about 2 inches below the glider. If that is standard, I do not know, but it means that I have to push it a little further from the glider for it to adequately support my long legs. This issue is not enough to make me give a lesser rating, however.
