Pros: Features, price, input/output capabilities, lens
Cons: Large, awk menu system, size
The Bottom Line:
The best value in MiniDV cameras.
Not the best, not the worst - but the best value. Can be had for $450 plus a $100 sharp rebate for a net price of only $350! Picture quality is not bad, and the features cannot be matched for even double the price by panasonic, sony or jvc.
Has IEEE1394 firewire connector, s-video and full-size RCA plugs. All connectors work as both input and output. This allows you to copy old movies from VHS or 8mm to MiniDV. You can use the firewire with a cheap IEEE1384 card ($29.99 from CompUSA with cable) to do video edits on your computer and then spit the film out to either the miniDV tape or create a videoCD with a program like Nero or EasyCD Creator.
While the screen is only 2.5", who really wants to watch a movie on a 3" screen anyway. I want to watch on my 65" TV.
This unit also comes with a remote control, and you can plug it in and use if the battery is dead, or when editing.
The best value in MiniDV cameras out there - period!
You can get better for more money, but this type of technology gets outdated fast. In two years I'll be able to buy a better one for the money I saved on this one.
