| Professional Reviews | New York Times Book Review: "Ms. Harbury's account of her search for her husband, especially her encounters with scary and slippery Guatemalan authorities, is absorbing. It is also tragic: she suffered a miscarriage just after she found out about Bamaca's capture, and witnessed horrible exhumations of bodies that always turned out not to be his. To get to this part of the story, however, the reader must wade through 100 pages of saccharine descriptions of her love affair, addressed to Everardo himself, and equally insipid accounts of the Guatemalan guerrillas, who come off as beatific youths who spend their time divvying up chores in egalitarian fashion and lying around the campfire with limbs entwined. Only once does she acknowledge that her lover has himself 'killed other human beings, that he has taken life.' But she quickly adds that she has no qualms about this, that she has long since accepted armed resistance in Guatemala 'as a cruel necessity'.", Washington Post Book World: "...[T]he reader who makes it past [the] bumpy beginning will be well rewarded. There are heroics here. There is a bold reach for truth. And, most memorably, there is a clear-eyed gaze into a labyrinth of lies." |
