The Scotts Company Scotts Osmocote Outdoor & Indoor Plant Food (2720301)
When I was working in a nursery 10 years ago, Osmocote was the only variety of this new "slow/time release" food on the market. So I thought I'd give it a try. All I could say was, "Wow!" This type of food has become so popular with the buying public, everybody is trying to get in on it.
I see Miracle-Gro has many called, "Shake and Feed." Even the people that many of us grew up with making aspirin, ...Bayer has a line of time release food products on the market.
Spectracide wanted to get on the market so bad they've come out with a product called ColorBurst. This product is excellent and has a 15-30-15 formula.
This product not only contains the three main ingredients needed for good flower growth like Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potash. It also contains other ingredients needed for good plant growth and flower production like copper, boron, cobalt and others. One of the most important ones is Manganese. Manganese helps break down phosphorus so it can be ingested by the roots of the plant. If your plant food doesn't have Manganese it's going to take a long time for the phosphorus to break down into a substance which can be taken in by the root system.
As a merchandiser I highly recommend Osmocote or ColorBust as a plant food for flowers and vegetables. The time release foods are an excellent way to feed your plants. Unlike old plant foods such as Miracle-Gro, a name we've all become familiar with. You had to mix it with water like KoolAid and mark it on the calender. The problem with these foods is that they are usually washed below the line of the root system tips in future watering of the plant.
Another problem I've found with most customers is that they mixed it up and applied it to dry soil. Meaning that most of the plant food solution was used to moisten the soil and never got to the root system level. If you insist on using this kind of plant food make sure and water the soil first. Then add the mixture of plant food about 30 minutes later.
Here again is another advantage of using time release plant food. I just sprinkle mine on top of the soil. Some prefer to mix it in with the soil which is fine. Use about 2 tablespoons full for every 2 square feet of soil in flower beds. Use a teaspoon full for container potted plants that are 4 to 8 inches in diameter. For a potted container plant that is larger in diameter, us a tablespoon.
Unlike the old KoolAid mixture of Miracle-Gro, use one application of time release food like Osmocote and you're good for 3 months. Everytime you water your plants the small, buck shot, sized pellets release a small amount of food every time they are watered.
When problems with blooming come from customers I ask them what they are feeding the flowers. I snicker/giggle inside because so many of them reply, "uhh... just water." I tell them they need to feed their plants so they get the nutrients they need for good growth and blooming.
Many will come back and tell me... (as many here in southern California do) ....I don't have time to feed my flower beds. Besides, I have sprinkler systems for my flower beds." That's when I tell them, "I have just the product you're looking for. This is what's called a time release food. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons for every 2 square feet of your flower beds. Every time your sprinklers come on the flowers will be fed. What's best is you won't have to re-apply this plant food for 3 months."
Most walk away with a bottle or bag of the product and return weeks later telling me about the unbelievable results they got. Bedding plants LOVE this type of plant food. You'll never see impatients and marigolds get so HUGE as you will once you start using a time release food like Osmocote.

Pros: Simple to use and apply. One application is good for 3 months.
Cons: The only con might be that the price is a little higher.
The Bottom Line:
Can be used for vegetables, annuals, perennials, house plants and fruit trees.
