Samsung DVD-R4000 DVD Recorder

Samsung DVD-R4000 DVD Recorder

DVD-RAM is definitely the runt of the recordable DVD litter, but maybe it'll get a boost from Samsung's new recorder. This deck is a virtual clone of Panasonic's DMR-E50, with progressive-scan video playback and a Time Slip function that imitates TiVo's ability to pause live TV.\n

Okay machine, seriously poor service

Author's Rating: Rating: 2/5 stars

Pros: Nice machine, but it only worked for a week.

Cons: POOR SUPPORT/Service. Try to get a refund at the store first!

The Bottom Line:
The machine is actually good. The experience with warranty service is reason enough to stay away

I saved up my money to get a decent DVD Recorder. I found mine at one of those membership type stores. I was thrilled. I have a huge project to do and the dvd recorded is integral !

I really loved the machine!I burned a grand total of 5 dvds. Within a week I had problems. Bought it on 1/7, It was not reading any discs at all by 1/15.
The instructions say to call Samsung before returning to the place of purchase. As it turned out, doing that was a mistake!
I'm kicking myself now for not going to store for a refund!

Samsung support was very nice (and oh so wrong). They said I should ship to their service center in NJ (CDE, Inc). I did that. It cost me about $15.oo to ship. I was assured by Samsung that it should only take a couple of days. From the way they reacted I suspect that the bad "reads" is a known issue with this piece (manufacture date of Aug 03)

It's now 2/17 and I have not gotten my machine back yet. I don't expect to EVER see it again. I call samsung periodically. First it was to be sent back to me on 1/29, then it was "in the next day or two". Last week it was "it could be a few days or several weeks". I was asked to fax a copy of my receipt....I have no idea why I bothered!

Apparently the parts are out of stock (another reason to suspect this isn't the only unit to have same problem).

In my conversations with Samsung, they have been friendly enough, but not exactly understanding that their "service center" has had my machine longer than I have.
This is unacceptable! Samsung should either replace my unit, or refund my money. They are very reluctant to do either!

The way I see it, Samsung has stolen my money, my merchandise and my time. It's really a shame. Up til now, I have been happy with Samsung products.
My advice is when it breaks down..get your money back and buy something else.
