Helps justify money spent on a Samsung DLP

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Picture quality is near HD.

Cons: Blue light on the player is too bright.

The Bottom Line:
This is the DVD player to get if you have a Samsung DLP rear projection.

Author's Review
I bought a Samsung DLP rear projection recently. I didn't want to spend $300 on a DVD player with so many out there under a $100. But I wanted an upgrade over the one I had. I figured I'd just wait until HD dvd players came out to spend more money. So I bought just an average progressive scan. Well, watching HD is just amazing. And now I don't want to watch anything less. But the progressive scan dvd player didn't really improve that much over my previous dvd player. The picture quality still just looked average. I was using Monster component cables too. I started reading about the hd931 and started to get really interested. I wasn't worrying too much about having to watch 4:3 stretched out because I don't have any dvd's in 4:3 aspect. I wasn't worried about only one DVI input on the DLP either since their seems to be some DVI switches out there. So I took the plunge and exchanged my progressive scan for the hd931. I bought a Monster DVI cable too. I am definitely impressed. What an upgrade! 1080i seems to be the best output setting. Like other reviews, it is not quite cable HD quality, but it definitely looks close! It's money well spent because it makes the money spent on the big screen look more justified.

The reviews that I've seen on the remote are mostly negative, which I tend to agree with. But I bought the player soley for picture quality, and it delivers. The remote control isn't going affect my decision on what component I buy.

I've come to realize that the Samsung DLP is kind of like a high-end sports car. It's such a pleasure watching it, but it needs high octane fuel (components, cables, HD signal) to be at its best. With what's out there right now, the hd931 is THE dvd player for the DLP. Just research a little more if you don't have a Samsung DLP to make sure it is just as compatible.

Can't wait for Step Into Liquid to be on DVD!!!
