Samson C01U
As a professional VOICE-OVER TALENT and a frequent traveller I was always in the need to carry around expensive and fragile equipment such as preamplifier, M-Box unit (needed for Pro Tools recording software), heavy and bulky cables, fragile expensive and heavy mikes, etc. in order to do jobs and auditions while away from my studio.
My problems ended when I discovered the Samson condenser microphone, last January, 2007, shortly after it was launched. Presently all I pack is my Mac Book laptop, my Samson mike and a standard U.S.B. cable. Using it handheld is OK but a desktop stand is a must for long recordings. If you are too picky you better buy the package that includes the Shock Mount.
For Mac users, the best software to go along with this setup is SOUND STUDIO (I use the 3.5.5 version which kept working fine after my move to LEOPARD Mac OS)
Believe me! This is a broadcast quality condenser mike. I have compared commercials done with a Samson C01u with jobs done with expensive mikes and only an expert could tell the difference.
In case you need to do interviews, you must buy a Samson of a higher price range, equipped with a selector allowing an EIGHT PATTERN pick up, as well as OMNIDIRECTIONAL and CARDIOID.
I am not acquainted with the software furnished free with this package. It is not necessary for me.
PRO quality with a beginners price.

Pros: Sound quality. Price. Plug and Play.
Cons: Scratches easily (pack it in a sock!). Very sensitive (use popper stopper or windscreen!)
The Bottom Line:
A must for VOICE-OVER TALENTS!
