Safety, Convenience and Durability Winner

Pros: Steel frame construction. Safety - don't have to lift unit off wastebasket to empty.
Cons: Wastebasket fill-indicator window could be larger.
The Bottom Line:
Unique safety (lift-out wastebasket), durability (steel frame)and convenience (lockable casters) features designed into the Royal 85X are unmatched by any other shredder in this price class.
Recently my four-year-old home crosscut shredder failed in service. While shredding one sheet at a time I heard a sharp “crack” and subsequent cracks and growls. Being a naturally-curious Mechanical Engineer I took the unit apart to see what had happened and if I could fix it. Over time and in spite of frequent cleaning, lubricating and reverse operation, paper had by-passed the cleaning fingers and had lodged inside the housing, pushing the plastic frames, that hold the unit mechanism together, to the breaking point. In any case, the unit was obviously beyond repair.
I went “shopping” at a number of on-line sites, including this site, and at local office supply and discount stores. I looked for a more durable replacement home-use crosscut shredder in the below-fifty-dollar price range. I closely examined a number of units from different manufacturers. Almost without exception the units were of the same plastic frame construction as my old unit, except the Royal 85X.
Among units in this price range the Royal 85X is quite revolutionary in that the well designed and unique truly jam-free roller design is complimented with a strong steel, not plastic, frame. I found several other features unique to this shredder model to be quite appealing. The large slide-out wastebasket with a window is a big convenience and safety plus as one does not have to lift the shredder head off to empty the wastebasket. On my old model I once found my fingers exposed to serious accidental injury when I overlooked unplugging the heavy and cumbersome unit while in a hurry to empty the wastebasket. The lockable casters and true (I verified it) 10-page shred capacity all for under $50 sealed the deal. There are loads of lesser-priced units out there but I did not find any with the safety, convenience and durability features of this unit – buy it.
