Author's Rating: Rating: 1/5 stars

Pros: -very good sound quality -attractive appearance -thoughtful one button control -well written manual

Cons: -may have to adjust the position of the speakers
-unreliable speaker unit
-no repair available anywhere

The Bottom Line:
Although the product produces very good sound, has attractive appearance and good functionality, I do not recommend this unit because of poor reliability, and no repair service from this manufacturer

Update 11/10/09: Speaker unit is unreliable. Unit failed simply by plugging it in.  No repair is available from manufacturer. They will honor the one year warranty, but after that they tell you to buy a new system. Knowing this, I would not by a thing from this company.
If you want speakers in a location where it is inconvenient to run wires, this product may be for you. I selected these speakers because of the good reviews I found. However, I suggest buying any wireless speakers from a store where satisfaction is guaranteed. (I chose Best Buy.) After using the AR AW871 for two days, I am very satisfied with them and won't be returning them.
Given my reservations, I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of the AR AW871 wireless speakers. If you can place the speakers where there is good reception, the sound quality is very good. If you place one of them where the signal is weak, that speaker will rescan to search for the carrier frequency. There will also be more background noise. The experience is very similar to listening to a weak channel on your FM radio. This potential problem is usually easily solved by moving the speaker to a slightly different location. Once you place the speakers where there is sufficient signal, you won't have to play with them again. The reception becomes stable, with low background noise and very good sound quality. The speakers then sound like you were tuned to a strong FM radio station.
Although there is no tone control for either bass or treble, the factory preset is very well balanced between low and high frequencies.
Each speaker is basically a stereo receiver in that either one can be set to receive either the right or left channel of the stereo signal from the transmitter. Alternatively, if you want to use one speaker in one room and the other in a different room, you can set each speaker to mono. This is a nice feature.
Each speaker comes with its own AC power module. However the speakers can also be operated by battery power, either alkaline or rechargeable. Each speaker contains its own recharger, so when the power module is used with rechargeable batteries installed, they will recharge. The manual does warn, however, not to us the AC power module when alkaline batteries are installed.
The manual is well-written so installation should not be a problem. A toll-free hotline number is also provided if you have a problem.
In summary, I happily recommend these speakers. Since your satisfaction will depend on whether you have a strong enough signal from the transmitter at the location where you want to place each speaker, I recommend that you purchase from a seller where returns are not a problem.
