The Rancilio Rocky burr grinder uses slow turning commercial grade grinder burrs grinding wheels to cut the coffee bean into uniform coffee grounds. This is better than a standard blade grinder which usually does not produce uniform grind sizes. Consistent grind size is important to promote better taste and aroma. It is especially important if you are grinding coffee for an espresso machine which needs a fine and consistent grind.

The Bottom Line:
It is a beautiful appliance and well worth the money if one has an upper-end espresso machine.
The Rancilio Rocky is a grinder created to be used in conjunction with the Rancilio Silvia, or similar high-end semi-automatic and automatic espresso machines. It is easy to use. Press a button and dial in the number using a large rotary dialer. The chamber into which one feeds the coffee beans is large. The chamber into which the ground coffee beans go into can be scooped from the top, or one can allow the dose to be put right onto one's portafilter basket, or some other low-depth container. I have found that a 1/2 cup measuring device fits perfectly under the doser to receive coffee. I then transfer the ground coffee, using the measuring device, over to an air-tight container. I then have fresh ground coffee for all morning.
I had read that one of the weaknesses of the Rancilio Rocky was spillage, but I have not found that to be true. I put the portafilter basket under the doser and it all went into the basket. However, the dosages are not equal. The first dosage always seems to be smaller than the second dosage. Since these two dosages do not fill the basket, I go for a third dosage, which then tends to over-fill my basket.
The Rocky is not as quiet as one is led to believe. I had read it is very quiet. The manufacturer states that it can go to 70db. Normal conversation is between 60-70 db, so it is not THAT quiet.
Note: This does make a superbly fine espresso. I bought the Rocky and the Silvia at the same time, but have not received my espresso machine as of this time. I was anxious to try out the Rocky so I went ahead and ground coffee per the instructions for my "regular" pum-driven espresso machine. If one uses that ground coffee on a pump driven espresso machine, instead of a pressure machine, such as the Rancilio Silvia, or other automatic espresso machines, it is going to not allow the water through the coffee in the portafilter. We put the grind up to 13 and it still was not coarse enough for our Delonghi machine. So we mixed it with our store-bought "fine ground" espresso in order to make our coffee. We can not wait for our Rancilio Silvia to arrive so that we can use the doser with the espresso machine for which it was made.
On the negative side, the dosages were not even. Maybe it is because we only ground enough beans to make 4 cups of latte, but it is recommended to grind only the coffee one needs so that the coffee stays fresh. Thus, it should have been able to handle that. We found it easier to put the ground coffee into a sealable container and then transfer the correctly needed amount of ground coffee onto the portafilter.
