Massimo Troisi Pours Himself Into the Poetic Il Postino
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: tender and funny, celebration of poetry, Troisi and Noiret, gorgeous scenery
Cons: tragic story behind the movie, tone shift toward the end of the film
Bottom Line:
"When you explain poetry, it becomes banal. Better than any explanation is the experience of feelings that poetry can reveal to a nature open enough to understand it."

Pros: Excellent acting, sensitive portrayal of human relationships, self-discovery, wonderful scenery.
Cons: Using a French actor as a Chilean character in an Italian movie.
Bottom Line:
Superb evocation of an Italian island community in the early fifties, set against the rise of Communism; the aspirations, self-realisation and achievement of a simple man.
