Pioneer DVR-810H DVD Recorder / Player with TiVo - If you can live with limitations
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: Video Quality, Faroudja DCDi, up conversion, TiVo Basic, Easy Recording of programs in Now Playing.
Cons: No editing, can't record transferred content, low quality input, no flexibility, Disk at once, expensive.
The Bottom Line:
It's a good unit if you only make DVD's from the "Now Playing" and watch DVD's. It is not suited to do anything else. It's a bit pricy.
The Good:
Excellent Video Quality (For a Tivo), Faroudja DCDi, high resolution up conversion of video and converts analog sound to digital for easy hookup, Tivo Basic service for fee free use, nice Tivo menu on recorded disks, good quality recordings, easy to transfer Tivo "Now Playing" items to DVD! Very nice collection of features in a very nice looking unit, easy to use supported features. Remote is almost the same as other Tivo's, so if you're used to the Tivo remote you'll like this one. Fan noise is quieter then other multi function Tivo's I heard.
The Bad:
Only allows you to copy video manually on composite video input and only one input. Will not allow you to use the S-video input to record, and if you trick it (only possible is setup for a cable box or satellite box) it will keep what ever program name it showed for the selected channel. It refused to record from my Camcorder, I just got little blips of video and sound (works fine recording on my LiteOn DVD recorder). It will not allow you to edit at all, you have to record it to "Now Playing" first, and then record all at once to disk. If using a RW disk, you have to erase completely, can't add to it. You can't record on the fly at all or pause recording, you have to program the record time first when recording from the video in. It won't record anything transferred to the unit (if you have another Tivo with home media option), only non-copy protected content originally recorded on this unit.
It's a good unit if all you want to do is make DVD's from the "Now Playing" section of the Tivo and watch DVD's. It is not suited to do anything else. It's a bit pricy compared to it's competitors.
