Pros: * DVD plus R/RW formats have highest compatibility * Excellent picture quality

Cons: * Earlier firmware a bit buggy; expect some quirkiness

Bottom Line:
Highly recommend if you are looking for a DVD recorder now, especially if you are considering another brand. There will probably be better choices in 2004. Read More

Philips finally worked out the bugs

Pros: 6 different recording speeds. Video quality far exceeds VHS.

Cons: Not quite as user-friendly as a VCR. Doesn't record Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.

Bottom Line:
The DVDR985 is an excellent DVD recorder. It has some annoyances, but it's still a great choice. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable DVD recorder. Read More

Pros: Worked well right out of the box. Stable. Produces DVDs with high quality video

Cons: Lousy manual, confusing and hard to use remote, and baffling on-screen menus

An affordable, good-quality DVD recorder. Produces excellent quality discs playable on most home players. Not really that hard to use once you've recorded your first disc or two. Read More

its a love - hate relationship

Pros: Fairly versatile, seems to work better with RW's.

Cons: That annoying Disk Error message. Never a clear reason what causes it to appear.

Bottom Line:
Record RWs and use your computer to convert to Rs. Sure they cost more, but hey they're eraseable. I still use the orginal 10. Oh, and stick to one speed. Read More
