Pros: Amazing Value Simple and Elegant Foreign Film Lover's Dream come True
Cons: Doesn't match my other black finish components? (matches the SAT HD200)
The Bottom Line:
Don't be an elitist snob; buy this amazing value and enjoy any DVD in your home theater.
I love foreign films. Some available on DVD only in R2/PAL format . . . like "Delicatessen" (available from amazon.uk)
Many other reviewers cover all the important stuff. Still there seemed to be some vagueness about compatibility specifics (even from reading the manual).
I bought the 727, brought it home and hooked it up (in my aux jacks until I was sure it worked).
I did the multi region hack (door open, 9,9,9,9,0)
I stuck in an R2PAL DVD, and got the rolling horizontal problem as on my old "hacked" dvd (Philips 751).
I went to the "Video Setup" in the on screen menu, set the TV to NTSC (default is "multi"), and Voila! The 727 now plays PAL format perfectly.
I now boldly replaced my old player, using the Y Pb Pr and optical audio connections. I went back to "Video setup" and set progressive scan "on". . . . beautiful picture.
I have gone back and forth between R1 NTSC and R2 PAL DVDs with no problems. Absolutely NO picture/playback problems on the DVDs I tested.
Picture is excellent (Sony 36XBR) digital audio is awesome on my 7.1 theater setup (Yamaha/Paradigm).
All this for $80 from Comp USA. By the way, the remote seems fine to me, with all the needed functions (other reviewers had complained), but I have a TSU 3000 remote (another amazing Philips product), so it's no concern to me.
