Pros: Size, Build Quality, Features, Attention Getter, Fun
Cons: No Gain Level on Microphone
The Bottom Line:
I would recommend this device for anyone who likes capturing moments on-the-go. With this little thing, you won't miss much.
I have had my SV-AV30 for a few months now and it continues to impress me. With the size of this device (smaller than a pack of cigarettes) and its multiple uses, you'll tend to bring it with you just about everywhere you go. While this is not a full on replacement for a video camera or a good digital camera, it will easily get the job of either done when called upon. It is hands down the beast MP3 player I've ever used and the voice recorder has proven ideal of meetings.
I have taken many, many hours of video and am completely happy with the quality. The resolution is half-VGA, meaning it is 340 x 220, which is perfect for the web. It also shows up surprisingly well on TV when using the docking cradle (a brilliant idea, by the way.) Low light situations are a bit of a problem for Video, but a room with a couple lamps will suffice. The pictures are about what you'd expect from a 640 x 480 digital; great for web display and will make a decent 4x6 print. The colors and image quality are good and the flash turns on when needed (and can be disabled if so desired). MP3 functions are easy to use. The in-line remote for MP3 features is great, especially when working out or running.
My sole complaint is that the microphone peaks too early. It is very sensitive and would benefit from an adjustable gain level. It is fine in most situations, I've even recorded acoustic music on it, but if a sudden jump in volume occurs it will probably peak the mic.
Overall I couldn't be happier with the SV-AV30. It is well built and feels solid. The usability is light years ahead of its predecessor, the SV-AV10.
