Better than Braun

Pros: excellent shave, seems well designed/built. Wet shave option, self cleaning system or liquid soap.
Cons: cleaning cycle takes 3.5 hours! Replacement blades/foil expensive
The Bottom Line:
Great choice for someone wanting a wet/dry electric shaver with self cleaning capability
My first self cleaning shaver was a Braun. The cleaning system used ethyl alcohol. It tended to evaporate, but, on the plus side, the cartridge could be refilled from ethyl alcohol purchased anywhere(though manufacturer wants you to buy their cartridges). The unit tended to run down its battery without warning and did not automatically recharge when placed in the stand. Within two years, the top connector on the stand broke(wouldn't stay down). Shave quality was mediocre -poor between the neck and rear of the jaw. So I looked at alternatives.
In short, I bought the Panasonic based on reviews, the fact that it had a cleaning system and looked well built. The way the shaver snaps into its base has no moving part to fail as failed on my Braun. The ability to use wet is a major advantage and makes it convenient to clean under running water when on the road. A power indicator signals battery status, though I have never had this unit's battery let me down. Its charger automatically keeps it fully charged.
Shave quality is excellent--noticeably better than the Braun. It shaves faster, closer and more comfortably. Unit is reasonably light and comfortable to handle.
cleaning cartridges must be bought from Panasonic. The cartridge filters cleaning water and adds some form of cleaner to the water. I have no idea what cleaning compound is being used, but being water based, evaporation while I am not home is not a serious issue as it was with the Braun.
Year later: Mostly clean by squirting with liquid soap and rinse in sink and then air dry. Do not feel self cleaning system gains much.
