The only way I see this DVD system being marked so low by other users is if they bought the unit when it first came out. Or if they went to one of these big box discount retailers (Costco, Kmart, Walmart) where the goods aren't taken care of as they should IMO. Besides that, I've had an absolutely wonderful experience with this DVD player.

It comes with a DVD deck, VHS deck, 80GB hard drive, and an SD slot. I thought I'd never use the SD slot, but I wound up buying a new digital camera and it came with SD. So I can view my pictures on the DVD player (awesome!). It can use DVD-/+Rs, DVD-RAMs and DVD-RWs. You can use any brand of DVD blank media! Some DVD recorder units suggest you should only record using certain DVD-R/RW brands (i.e. Toshiba, Maxell). And if you dont use the brands suggested, the company can't guarantee recording results. With this model, you can use whatever brand you want. Amen to that.

There is a huge learning curve though, as there are many features and you may need to be a little tech savvy. There's alot to learn on this unit. I'd STRONGLY advise not throwing away the manual.

The only thing that hasn't worked so far is the TV Guide navigator. And its not due to the DVD unit. The TV Guide navigator is supposed to work if you connect the cable signal directly to the DVD and then the DVD is connected to the cable box. The DVD, via the cable signal, will pick up the TV Guide channel and you can program recordings directly through the DVD. The problem is my cable signal only works directly via the cable box. So the TV Guide feature doesn't work. If this is the case, then you'll just connect using the "IN3*" input in the DVD (if you're confused, you'll understand it when you get the unit).

And you may have issues with the remote. Its got weird buttons and its totally different with what we're all used to.

I bought a Samsung DVD-VR320 in January 2006. I was ready to throw it out of the window by April 2006. I had major DVD recording issues and the VHS picture quality sucked. I bought this model shortly after and I haven't regretted it!
