Pros: Nice feature set, good price point. 3.5" LCD.
Cons: Not for shooting 16x9. Separate rings for zoom and focus would be nice.
The Bottom Line:
This is THE bang for the buck videography machine.
This camera is a versatile, productive tool. I have been blessed to have shot with GL1s, GL2s, all flavors of XL1s, and most of Panasonics "prosumer" cameras, and even the wonderful VX1000. The AG-DVC30P holds a special place anywhere among these cameras. The camera seems to be very flexible for shooting in a variety of different lighting situations. The auto mode is a little dodgy in changing light, you will actually see the camera change the color balance when going from one zone to another. As an example, I was recently shooting a meeting with a powerpoint presentation projected on a screen in one area of the room. During the zoom from an area of the room with the screen in it, to a wide shot of the room, the camera would sharply change color temperature. Granted, that is a tough situation to deal with, but it surprised me. Overeall, the auto mode seems to be too "warm." In manual mode, this camera is on par or above almost anything else out there. I would strongly recommend this unit for the pro or semi-pro out there who wants killer results. If you are a control freak, this is the one for those of you out there on a budget. Go ahead and spring for the XLR adaptor (AY-MYA30G).
