OptioWP: The Digital Point & Shoot You've Been Waiting For

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Small. Fast. Good image quality.

Cons: Should've bought the 6mp WPi.

The Bottom Line:
Buy it! It's waterproof, it's small, it takes great pictures!

Author's Review
I'm a professional photographer, but I don't always want to lug my 5 pound, $5,000 digital SLR with me. Sometimes it's nice to have something that doesn't require two hands to use. But I haven't been willing to sacrifice image quality for portability.

Enter the OptioWP: it's so small that it gets mistaken for a cell phone. It shoots quickly and effortlessly. With around 20 program modes on the camera, you can tailor your shooting to the subject: I've been particularly happy with the Night Shots & Self Portrait modes.

The "Green Button" lets you quickly access menu settings that you use frequently. I have my Green Button programmed to allow me to change Sensitivity, Focus Area, EV Compensation and White Balance on the fly. If you're a photo-geek, you can even preview the histogram, shutter speed & aperture settings before shooting any pictures.

Coupled with a minitripod & using the 2 second timer mode, you can shoot some darn fine images at the lowest Sensitivity of ISO 50.

The quick access to Flash & Focus Modes makes it easy to get the right shot.

The LCD screen is bright enough in all but the sunniest of settings.

Check out Pentax's nylon case, with a nifty magentic flap to keep the camera, a spare battery & an extra memory card protected.

Get yourself the protective rubber skin for the OptioWP through Pentax's website: the silver body doesn't provide that much grip in slippery situations. And after three months of use, I've got a few dings on my camera body.

My biggest gripe is that 3 weeks after I bought the OptioWP, Pentax released the OptioWPi, which increased the sensor from 5 megapixels to 6. Darn it, I should have waited!
