But there s a lot more. Like Subject Tracking to automatically track and auto focus on a moving subject; one-touch video recording with optical zoom, stereo sound and an in-camera editing function; HDR (high dynamic range) function that automatically merges several images of the same scene to achieve a single image with a broad, beautiful range of tonal detail not otherwise possible; and 17 scene modes including the Scene Auto Selector, which automatically recognizes any shooting situation and optimizes all the settings for that scene.

Pros: Ease of use, 10x zoom, small size, good value
Cons: Focus hunting, especially with video. Low light picture quality.
Bottom Line:
A major step up from your basic 3x zoom compact, but easy to use. 10x zoom is excellent. Occasional out of focus issues, especially when shooting videos.

Pros: Small size, good feel in the hands, HD video recording, large LCD, easy Record button.
Cons: Lens defect may cause it to get stuck, pop-up flash gets in way.
Bottom Line: The S8100 is a good camera with HD recording and high-resolution photos. But its recent lens defect makes getting an extended warranty an option to consider.

Cons: Occasional soft focus in photos; lots of focus hunting with video; modest battery life
Bottom Line:
The specs for the Nikon S8100 look great but the camera's overall performance is disappointing. In particular, video from the S8100 is mostly not usable.
