The Nikon D50 with 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens is a great way to move from standard compact cameras to more sophisticated DSLRs. The 6.1 megapixel camera features numerous shooting modes that go from fully automatic to fully manual, giving you the flexibility to learn at your own pace, and can shoot at a burst rate of 2.5 frames per second. The included 18-55mm kit lens is light and compact, and takes wonderful photos. Together, the Nikon D50 camera body with 18-55mm lens makes the perfect beginner, or second camera, setup.

Pros: Sturdy, well balanced, LOOOONG battery life, TONS of features.
Cons: None - especially given the price!
The Bottom Line:
Excellent camera for any photography enthusiast, or even as a backup camera body for a professional.
This is a truly amazing camera. Let me start by saying that I am a Canon user who has been converted to Nikon by the D50, since it offers basically the same amount of camera as the Canon Rebel XT for about $200 less (6.1 versus 8.0 megapixels, but the difference is really of no concern unless you are a pro).
Look and Feel
This Nikon D50 feels very sturdy in the hands. You can tell that this camera continues Nikon's almost legendary reputation for durability - I feel like I can drive over this thing with a truck and it would still work (though I am not planning on trying that).
The grip is comfortable, and the camera is very nicely balanced, so it is easy to keep steady.
Responsiveness
The Nikon D50 is ready to take pictures as soon as you flip the "on" switch. The autofocus is lightning fast (faster than I can focus manually) thanks to a 5-zone AF system, and the shutter releases as soon as the button is pressed with no percievable lag.
Picture Quality
the photos taken with the included kit lens are amazing. The lens is a good quality AF-S lens, with a good midrange of focal distances. To see pictures that I have taken with this camera go here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/irchriscdk.
The 6.1MP resolution is good for prints up to 20X30 inches, and I do not think I will ever want to print larger than that, so I do notneed any more resolution.
Battery Life
The included battery lasts a LONG time - Nikon says it will last for around 2000 shots, and I have had my camera for a week now and have yet to recharge the battery even though it has gone with me to Downtown Chicago, and the zoo.
Memory Cards
This DSLR records onto inexpensive SD cards, instead of the more expensive CompactFlash cards that most other DLSRs use.
This is an added bonus.
Overall Opinion
Great camera. The Nikon AF-Nikkor lenses are less expensive than the equivalent Canon EOS lenses, and this camera takes great pictures.
It is sturdy, durable, and well balanced - not to mention incredibly easy to learn how to use since it has many automatic features, as well as detailed instructions for the manual features.
I would highly recommend the Nikon D50 as a first SLR to any serious amateur photographer.
