The Coolpix SQ is Nikon's newest compact, lightweight digital still camera with a high resolution imager and a swiveling Nikkor 3x zoom lens. It features an entirely new body design, unlike anything ever seen before in the Coolpix family. The Coolpix SQ is truly "pocket size" and highly durable thanks to an all-metal body. It's an easy-to-use mid- range model with superior image quality that will satisfy the needs of beginners to advanced amateurs. Minimize

It's our toy, when the D1X is at home

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: it's compact, it's compact and it's sexy too.

Cons: It's not a D1X, but hey I wanted a compact pocket toy

The Bottom Line:
It's a sexy toy. I know that sounds ridiculous but believe me.

We got one of the first SQ's, they're not in the shops yet over here. Thanks.

I very much like the design, I had a sony DSC F1 a few years ago and I really wanted to get another cam with a revolving lens (selfportrait feature is lots of fun with friends)

3 megapixels is not exceptional and the small lens has its limitations of course (a bit grainy and deformations of course), but quality is fair enough for publishing, if you tweak things a bit in photoshop. I find it hard to compare, as I only have a D1X and a Sony DSC F1 at the other end of the scale. No real benchmark!!! Colors are very much alive. I suggest you'll have to find that out for yourself.

Smooth downloading, just put it on the docking Cool Station and press a button. Nikonview pops up.

LCD screen is very bright, even in bright sunlight, which is a surprise.

Lots of preset ("scenes") for portrait, sports, sunset, B&W, panorama and they seem to be really useful. Sports (fast shutter speed) is useful for shaky hands, wich is a problem with small cams like this. You can't block it against your forehead, that would be really silly. :)))

Yes, design is important for us. It's soooo SEXY.
We like toys like the SQ. You can buy a "cam" for less money, but hey my SONY DSC F1 was twice as much for a 640 x 480 pixel 5 years ago. And it's still a sexy toy when I take it out, people love to take a look at it. And you get a pic of yourself with them next to you. With the SQ, you can make it a small 40 sec video too.

If you don't understand this concept then it's not the right cam for you.

If you really want a high tech shirt-pocket-compact, that's what it is designed for. And because it's compact, it has limitations, there is no way around that. That said, these limitations won't spoil the fun in our case.

useful extras:
- 2nd battery (60 minutes lifespan) you can load it separately in the cool station dock.
- Compact Flash of course, 128 or 256 MB should keep you more than happy until the battery expires.
- bag is not included.
