Excellent camera when the SLR is out of reach

Pros: easy to use, excellent resolution and rendering
Cons: some often used features can be hard to get to, size
The Bottom Line:
Excellent camera - in between professional and enthusiast.
As a graphic designer, I often find that I need to either shoot an image at a specific angle myself - particularly when a client doesn't understand print resolution vs. web resolution. I also enjoy taking landscape shots. The coolpix 8700 is a "prosumer" camera - low end pro camera or higher end consumer camera - and it's been a great blend for me. You can take excellent snapshots without delving into the menus - but the best way to use this camera is to go through the manual and through the menus so you can take advantage of necessary features (like white balance). While a really good SLR was out of my reach at the time, this has filled in nicely.
I snagged the macro lens eventually - and you DO have to read the manual to be able to use that well - I've read other reviews where people insisted the macro didn't work. It does, but you have to get into the menus and set the camera up correctly.
I've found the battery life to be much better than any other digital camera I've owned, and it keeps its charge over a period of disuse as well.
I dislike what I'll call the extended zoom. Essentially, there's the optical zoom and then a computerized extension of the zoom. The display shows you when you go to the extended zoom by changing the colour of the zoom icon. I wish more cameras would just leave that extended zoom off - it's a crappy feature which just makes for VERY grainy photos - pretty much useless.
You want a nice zoom? Get the telephoto lens adapter for the camera.
This was definitely a good value for me.
