Best choice I could have made for my first digital camera

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: GREAT pictures! Compact! Once you get past the instructions, it's really easy.

Cons: Instructions could be better written. Maybe a "NIKON 8700 for Dummies" is in the works.

The Bottom Line:
You want to hang your pictures on the wall? GET IT!

I've spent the last few years ALMOST buying a digital camera. When the new wave of 8Mb cameras came out, it was my wife who said: "NOW! Do it now!"
So after reading every available review on epinions and slowly working my way through newsgroups I finally made my decision. I couldn’t be happier!
The one thing that tied it up for me was a term I wasn’t familiar with.
Chromatic Aberrations
Apparently it's a problem with many of the 8MB cameras.
I didn’t have a problem with the placement of buttons or other limitations that other reviewers refer to. Yes, it's a good idea to get a second battery. Yes, it's a good idea to get a bigger compactflash card. Yes, these are both good ideas no matter what digital camera you buy.
Keep your eyes on the Sunday paper and the internet. Great deals can be found on batteries and CF cards. You've just got to keep at it and be willing to MAIL the rebate form in.
I just came home from my Colorado vacation. In addition to the standard photo opportunities, the panorama feature is one of the best things about this camera. All I need now is a way to print a picture that wide.
I hope my statement is helpful, but the best advice I can give you is buy the camera that is best suited for your needs. If you intend to print and frame your work, this is a great camera. If you're just taking pictures on holidays and emailing them, you'll be much happier with a lower MP and lower priced camera.

Good Luck!
