The third NFL Blitz title on the Game Boy Color features roster updates, new plays, and an added mini-game mode, while the same "No Refs, No Rules, No Mercy" is once again incorporated. Before playing, users can select from any of the NFL teams with ratings based on the 2000 season.

Modes of play include the Arcade Mode, which pits two teams together for a one-time grudge match, and Season Mode, which lets you embark on a 17-week season and into the playoffs if you can win nine games. From the options menu, users can select one of two camera views and the game's length, ranging from one-, two-, or four-minute quarters in addition to a fast or normal clock speed setting.

During offensive play, users can set men in motion behind the quarterback and activate turbo for the player carrying the ball. Catching multiple passes in a row for positive yardage gains can make a player "On-Fire," increasing the likelihood of making future catches, completing passes or avoiding tackles. Defensive play is much the same in that it involves switching players, activating turbo, and making tackles by either running into the player carrying the ball or pressing a button to dive after the player.

Kicking field goals involves finding the correct combination of distance, short or long, and direction, left, center, or right, on the Kick meter at the right of the screen. For those having difficulty mastering the technique, a Practice option is available from the main menu.

There is also the option to enter three character codes, using one of the buttons along with a direction on the control pad. Correctly entered codes can provide users with numerous advantages, including faster players and additional playbook pages. NFL Blitz 2001 also features a password system so players can resume their seasons at a later time. Minimize
