Much Better With Vonage VOIP
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: easy installation, better connectivity, looks good in black
Cons: none so far
The Bottom Line:
I highly recommend this cable modem for anyone in the market for an upgrade. Especially if you use any VOIP telephone services.
Up until about 2 months ago I was using an ancient (about 7 years old) Best Data cable modem with my newly acquired Vonage VOIP telephone service.
At first I was having problems with dropped calls and poor sound quality so I contacted Vonage to download their "update". This fixed some of my issues but I still had problems from time to time.
After researching the problem for a few days, I began to get the idea that my problem wasn't with Vonage. I more and more I thought about it the simpler the solution seemed to be. I needed to update my cable modem to something compatible to the new standard.
My first choice was a DLink DCM202 cable modem, since the rest of my gear was already by DLink and performed very well for me. This was my first mistake. After installing the new cable modem I noticed an immediate increase in speed right up until the time my modem died for no apparent reason. I RMA'd it back to DLink and they sent out another unit right away. They get a few points for the quick turnaround. So I installed the new modem and it died after approximately 6 hours of use. It just refused to sync with my ISP.
After several calls to my ISP and DLink, I finally decided to go ahead and spend the extra money for a Motorola Surfboard SB5120 cable modem. It's the best money I've ever spent on home networking hardware by far. After the simple installation, my speeds increased to the full advertised rate of 6Mbit and my Vonage problems magically disappeared.
The moral of this story is you definitely get what you pay for when it comes to cable modems. My "bargain" DLink is currently collecting dust under my desk waiting to get sent back. What a pain!
