If you don't expect too much...you won't be let down.

Pros: Low cost of ownership/operation, build quality, reliability, styling, ergonomics, resale value.

Cons: Terrible accelaration, only adequate brakes, wind noise, roominess.

The Bottom Line:
Yes I recommend it for basic transportation and medium distance driving. Its reliable and well built, just don't try to race it.

I got my 1999 Mirage in late 2000 as a 2 year off-lease vehicle with 27,000 miles on it. It's a 2 door base model with the smaller 1.5L engine matched with an automatic transmission. The color was Dark Green outside, Charcoal inside, with manual windows and door locks, and no sunroof.
I paid approx $7,500 plus financing fees...

I now have over 143,000 miles on it (as of October '05)
and I am overall extremely happy with it. I needed a reliable low cost Japanese vehicle, after driving unreliable American sports cars for a few years, and the Mirage delivered. It is extremely reliable (if you take care of it), and I literally have never had a single major problem with it. It's fuel efficient, and cheap to operate with tires costing only around $50 to replace. It's also a decent looking vehicle that was actually a bit ahead of its time in 1999 with its progressive rear brake light design. Inside the finish and build quality is impressive for a low-end car and it has weathered well with no pieces falling loose or breaking. I replaced the stock AM/FM radio with an aftermarket CD player, other than that the car remains stock.

What's the down side? Well it has no pick-up, but that is the fault of the less-than ideal transmission that makes hunting for gears a daily adventure. With a 5-speed the car would have been peppier. Wind noise is also a problem above 90 miles/hr..but you shouldn't be taking this car to those speeds anyway for long stretches of time. And of course the standard complaint that its cramped inside (mostly the back - at 6'1" I am just fine up front).

So overall you get what you pay for, nothing more & nothing less. It's great bang for the buck, and I highly recommend the car if your looking at a used one. (Mitsubishi stopped producing new Mirages - its now a Lancer).
