Great camera, great price.

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Size, feel, looks, features. Variety of sizes and formats. Plays on TV.

Cons: Lens rattle. Auto focus sound on video recording. Filters don't fit directly on lens.

The Bottom Line:
You can't beat the look, style, and features for the price. It rivals cameras two or three times more expensive. I'm very happy with it.

I bought this camera after checking numerous reviews on Epinions, Amazon, and other sites. I have had it a few weeks, using it a lot to be familiar with it before a Sept. to Italy.

My previous digital camera was a cheap Logitech that came free with my computer. This one is, as one would expect, light years beyond that. I love the look and feel of this camera. One reason I bought the Z1 is that I like the silver and chrome look better than the newer black plastic Z3. Even though this camera came out two years ago, it still turns heads, and aside from not having the anti-shake feature the newer models do, the specs aren’t that different unless you need 4 or more megapixels.

I took it into Best Buy the other day when I was looking for a case and the salesman was Ooohing and Ahhing over it. He couldn’t believe that I only paid $139 (refurbished on Amazon.com). It looks nicer and has as more features that the cameras Best Buy was selling at twice the price. Ditto for what I saw at Wal-Mart and Target.

Don’t be fooled by the Z10 which is similar but appears to have fewer features (and looks cheaper). I’d recommend buying a refurbished Z1 over a new Z10 even if the prices were the same.

The camera uses SD memory cards. I bought two 512 MB cards for less than $40 each so I can take about 1000 pictures on my trip, way cheaper than “real” film.

The built in flash works very well. It lit up my 50’ wide yard in the dark.

I wish they sold a filter that fit right on the lens (to protect it). I don’t like using an extender tube (sold separately) to attach filters. I bought the extender tube and filters on eBay for about $35 but am not convinced now that I need them.

Don’t bother with the Minolta CSDG-1000 Case. I’m sending mine back and buying a store one.

This is a great camera!
