i sweated about buying camera for a good two months, much of the research was performed on this site.
all about the zoom...
was originally drawn to this camera because of the unheard of zoom (10x optical, 4x digital, total of 40x). my current camera was only 6x and did not afford me the distance required for candid shots. this is the longest zoom for a camera in this price range.
rapid autofocus...
another drawback to my older model was the time required to autofocus. in some cases it took an unbearable 1.2 seconds. timing for action shots was a painful exercise in precise computation (something i do not have the head for). the Z1 can focus and snap a pic in 0.2 seconds. almost as fast as an SLR.
formfactor...
the weight of the camera is deceiving as it is hard to believe something this light will perform. but it does very well under all but the extreme circumstances of using the entire reach of the zoom. there is a good shake compensator built into the camera that will prevent blurred shots.
overall...
this is the perfect camera for what i use it for. long reaching shots with a rapid focus. several focusing functions that serve me well.
