Pros: Quality results, cheap, good features and software, slim.
Cons: A little slow and perhaps a delicate machine.
The Bottom Line:
Quality results, good price.
I have a large photographic collection and I license my work through a website. I use to pay for PCD file scans of each image but that allowed my clients a maximum print to A4 at 300dpi. I use to pay about NZ$3.50/US$2.00 per scan which is quite cheap as far as scans go.
But since I purchased this scanner, I have done thousands of scans, so buying this scanner has paid for itself and then some.
But the biggest gain for me is the quality files I can now create. The scanner can create files over 100 megs with a resolution over 7000 x 5000 px. The results are very good and I think the software is also good as you can enhance the image quite easily. It has a reasonably easy to use interface that enables the perfect scan by allowing you to adjust a number of colours if you want. E.g., if I adjust green, it only affects that which is green. This is an important feature for me with my landscape shots. E.g., I often I find coastal shots that have greens and blues result in the greens being quite dull while the blue of the water quite bright. But turning up the yellow within the green makes the greens brighter. Although one has to be careful when doing this. If it is too bright, it can result in spots on the image that may not be noticeable when looking at the image in the scanner's software, but is viewable in PhotoShop when opened at it's real size. There are the other usual tweaks such as brightness and contrast and Red, Blue, & Green adjustments, saturation etc.
I was a little worried about forking over the cash before using the scanner, but I have no regrets.
To anyone thinking of buying this scanner, I say go ahead. The results are great and the price is very good. These 2 reasons are why I am happy with this scanner even if the scans are somewhat slower than say Nikon scanners. Although the scanner is certainly faster if you have USB2 as opposed to USB1. When scanning at the highest settings, I have to wait about 10-15 mins on a USB2 port. Not a big deal as I do something else while the scan is in process. Although it does take up your PCs resources so you cannot multitask, but I have 2 machines networked together, so while one is engaged in scanning the other is free to use.
Overall the best buy slide scanner out there from what I have seen and researched.
