The popularity of digital imaging is continually on the rise. It is involved in numerous professional applications as well as home use for e-mail correspondence, Internet web sites, and cataloging on CD. Problems with Mac G3/OS9.1

Author's Rating: Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: Excellent hardware.

Cons: Lousy software compatibility with G3 and OS 9.1

The Bottom Line:
Can't recommend for Mac g-3 os9

Author's Review
Got my new 5400 and had trouble installing the software on my G3 running OS 9.1. Crashed when attempting to install all available software. Succeeded installing just the scan utility and plug-in. Scanned two slides successfully, excellent quality although slow using Digital ICE. But like another reviewer said, it beats spotting manually. I was impressed with sharpness, especially with 13x19" blowups compared side-by-side from the 5400@5400dpi and my other scanner, the Epson PhotoPerfection 2450@3200dpi. Dramatic improvement in detail with the DiMage. I was starting to get very enthused about my purchase.

Then I tried to scan a third slide and the utility wouldn't launch, importing through Photoshop 6.1. An error message about checking for other DiMage software in use. No other DiMage software is installed or open.

Called Minolta support but they were not helpful, citing another similar problem recently encountered with a Mac user. The support tech couldn't remember which OS or computer. He sent that customer to Apple for a solution. I assume that customer was unable to get a solution from Apple, as I've never had any success there trying to troubleshoot problems with non-Apple products. I was really put off by the non-interest shown by the Minolta support person. Therefore, I sent the scanner back for a refund, absorbing $30 in 2-way shipping charges in the process. Better than wasting several more hours in futility, trying to de-bug the weak DiMage software. It's a shame because this seems like an excellent piece of hardware. Would like to hear from other Mac users about this.
