Minolta 5400 - Learn how to use it with Vuescan
| Author's Rating: |

Pros: Great scans, if you put in the effort.
Cons: OK customer service. Tough to learn how to use with Vuescan.
The Bottom Line:
If you really need to save money, buy the Minolta. Otherwise, check out the Nikon.
By now, you have read the other reviews of the Minolta 5400. You know that it can be coaxed to give very good scans. You know that focusing correctly is critical for good images. You probably also know that the Minolta software is less than satisfactory, and if you are determined to get the best out of your 35mm slides, you have purchased and are using Vuescan.
I am editing my review after I received my 5400 back from repair. I decided to try to eliminate the red cast to the images I was scanning using the 5400 with Vuescan. After several hours of plugging away, I found the problem. With its default options enabled, Vuescan uses a black point of 0%. This affects the histogram correction algorithm which adjusts the displayed and stored image in Vuescan. The result is that it does not set the pixel with the lowest brightness value to 0. It leaves it at whatever raw value it was read in at. The result is poor contrast in the image. It will look washed out on screen. The solution is to set the black point to any value other than 0. Even 0.02% will result in proper contrast.
Now that I have figured out how to properly use the Minolta 5400 with Vuescan, my opinion of the scanner must be revised. In fact, I must give it a thumbs up.
