One of the Best Prosumer Cameras as of 12/03
| Author's Rating: |

Pros: Full feature set, great ergonomics, 7x optical zoom with anti-shake, takes filters & flashes
Cons: Not many. Body is plastic rather than titanium (grin).
The Bottom Line:
Enough features and quality for near-professional work. Best of the prosumer-level cameras as of 12/2003.
I feel that this is the best prosumer camera as of 12/2003!
I've conducted an extremely thorough review of 4-5MP cameras offered by all of the major manufacturers at this time. Sources: Consumer Reports, all of the user-oriented evaluation sites like PC Magazine and epinions.com, DCRP reviews, Steve's Digicam Reviews, photo-i, and Rob Galbraith, among others).
Main advantages include: full feature set, great ergonomics/easy to use (good combination of customizable on-camera buttons and good flat menu structure), RAW mode/TIFF/3 levels of JPEG, 7x optical lens with anti-shake technology (28-200mm range), live histogram, great movie mode (with a long 15-minute limit and sound), long-lasting l-ion battery, CF I/II/microdrive compatible, manual lens barrel zoom control (for good control along with the saving of battery power), manual focus ability as well as manual focus assist in conjunction with auto-focus, hot shoe flash mount, full program/shutter/aperture priority/manual settings, FAT32 format compatible (allowing for >4Gb card capacity), ability to accept filters on the lens (for that all-important UV filter for lens protection), good bundled software.
I also got a Lexar 512Mb 40x card, with image retrieval capabilities. Good size for this camera - from about 66 TIFF images to more than a thousand lower-rez JPEGs.
I got a prosumer camera because I'm still waiting for a high-end Nikon digital SLR with a 1:1 lens conversion factor...where is it Nikon? (grin)
