2000 Mazda ProtegeThe Protege offers an impressive amount of headroom and legroom. In fact the Protege is as roomy as many of the longer, wider and pricier mid-size sedans. Space is important for taller buyers and its something many compacts dont offer. Front-seat roominess is comparable to that of a Honda Civic EX sedan.

Pros: Lasts forever (with synthetic oil)
Cons: Too many plastic parts
To me the measure of an automobile is simply how long it lasts, that is, how many miles you can put on it before it finally becomes to expensive to maintain. I give the example of my first car, a 64 Chevy Impala. I had it for 120K when it was very apparent that it needed a new engine. OK $900 and two weeks later the trany goes. That and a Jeep that the drive train and the trany died on at 91K both led me to try Japanese cars. Sadly for Detroit and my own national pride it seems unlikely I will ever go back. Both Nissan and Mazda put out very good products which are moderately priced. Toyotas are very good although overpriced and I would love a Mitsubishi Diamante (which I leased for a few months a couple of years ago but I can't afford that either). So performance and budget gives me the choice of Nissan or Mazda. I will take the Mazda and here's why. The buzz I had been told about Mazda was originally from my dad. He was a mechanic about a century ago and went to school to become an engineer. He told me that Mazda's unique engine the Wankel(SP?)was in fact impossible. It seemed odd to me that so many were on the road if that was the case so I decided to try it out for myself. First let me tell you that I put miles on a car like nobody you've ever seen. When I was going to school I drove 85 miles to class and 85 miles back from class every day. I rarely work anywhere that isn't at least 65 miles away and most weekends spend at least one day just driving somewhere. That, and the fact that I go up to Canada just about every chance I get gives you some idea of how many miles I can put on a car. A few years ago I also found out about synthetic oils. I have used nothing but pure synthetic oil in my Mazda and I have almost 100K on it now and not only can I pass anybody on a hill whenever I want but when I check the oil after a few thousand miles it is still clear! I mean that is unbelievable. So, my recommendation, Mazda and synthetic oil.
