2000 Mazda ProtegeThe Protege offers an impressive amount of headroom and legroom. In fact the Protege is as roomy as many of the longer, wider and pricier mid-size sedans. Space is important for taller buyers and its something many compacts dont offer. Front-seat roominess is comparable to that of a Honda Civic EX sedan.

Great compact for larger drivers

Pros: Handling, size, comfort
Cons: A little rough riding and noisy
The Bottom Line:
Roomy, economical, reliable, good looking.
The Protege is an excellent fit for my 6'1", 250 pound frame. Comparable cars (Corolla, Civic) were sorely lacking in head or legroom. The back seat is also bigger than comparable imports. Though the gas mileage is only good (25 mpg city) rather than incredible, I recommend it highly due to its low price, high reliability, interior comfort, and good looks.
I compared it rigorously to the Civic and Corolla before buying. The Civic is a perfect choice for a driver shorter than myself. The Corolla was the quietest but has a teeny tiny back seat and pedals that are too close together for my big feet.
Tip: Rip off the factory Michelins. They skid too easily on wet roads and are VERY noisy. I recommend Yokohama Avid Touring tires. I was thrilled by the reduction in noise and improvement in wet-road handling.
