Great drive... if they pay you to take it!

Pros: 1. The drives only cost us about $40 per year - OUCH!!!

Cons: A 40% failure rate in less than 30 months?!

Author's Review
About 2-1/2 years ago, I replaced the computers in our computer lab at our school by building new machines with my classes. It was a great learning experience for them, and several have gone on to build their own home machines.

Now to the Maxtor fiasco... we bought 10 of these drives, but have had four of the ten fail with no SMART warning. Funny thing is, about three months before buying the Maxtors, I also bought 10 IBM 40GB drives for the first phase of our project. NONE of the IBM drives have died, under the exact same conditions. I contacted Maxtor after the first drive died, and just sent another email when the last three died this past month. No response (imagine that!) Guess I was hoping they would do something since there have been so many negative reports about this model.

Lessons Learned:
1. As with ALL data, keep consistent backups, and have a spare drive handy if you can't afford the downtime.
2. Buy ONLY drives with 5 year warranties - there's a reason they only put 1 year on these, apparently.
